2019 Q2 Dealer profitability

Total Industry
Dealer profitability, as measured by net profit as a percentage of sales (NP%S), for the second quarter of 2019 was 1.2%, leaving the average dealer at 1.0% for the first half of 2019. While this compared to 1.5% for the first half of 2018, it should be remembered that average dealer profitability for the final quarter in 2018 was just 0.5%.
State-by-State
New South Wales/Australian Capital Territory
The average NSW/ACT dealer NP%S for June quarter 2019 was 1.2%, leaving dealers at 1.1% YTD. While this was -0.2% down on the first half of 2018, it was an uplift over the final quarter of 2018, which finished at 0.3%.
Queensland
The average NP%S for dealers in Queensland for the June quarter was 1.7%, meaning these dealers averaged 1.3% for the year to date. This was in line with Q4 2018, but behind the 2018 YTD NP%S level of 2.0%.
South Australia/Northern Territory
The average dealer in the SA/NT state group saw NP%S of 0.8% for the second quarter of 2019 with a YTD NP%S of 1.0%. This was down -0.9% from the 2018 YTD position of 1.9% as well as being -0.6% from the Q4 2018 level of 1.6%.
Victoria/Tasmania
The average dealer in Victoria & Tasmania achieved NP%S of 0.7% for the June quarter in 2019, which also left them with NP%S of 0.7% for the year to date. This compared to 1.4% for the first half of 2018 and 0.9% for the final quarter of 2018.
Western Australia
Dealers in Western Australia saw NP%S of 1.1% for the second quarter of 2019 and 0.9% for the first half of the year. While this was up +0.1% from December quarter 2018, it remained slightly behind the 2018 YTD position of 1.2%
Segments
The dealers in the Volume segment saw profitability for Q2 2019 of 1.3%, which left them with YTD NP%S of 1.2%. The average dealer in the Prestige segment saw NP%S of 1.1% in Q2 2019 and 1.0% for the year to date. The dealers in the Luxury segment returned NP%S of 1.1% in Q2 2019 and 0.9% for the first half of the year overall.
